More fun with baking soda and vinegar

We all know what to expect when we combine baking soda and vinegar. We mostly use it for volcano explosions. Here is a little twist to the experiment that makes kids scream (in a good way) and ask for more!

You will need:
see-thru containers
vinegar
food coloring
deep tray
spoons
baking soda

Pour pure vinegar into the containers. Have the kids pick their color and let them pour it in and mix. We also mixed red and yellow for orange and blue and red for purple. Place the containers in the deep tray.

Give kids some spoons and let them fill the containers one by one with a whole lot of baking soda (that depends on how much excitement you are looking for).

Watch what happens and imagine four kids screaming with excitement at the same time!

Now you see why you need the deep tray!

It was an ongoing excitement. We added more vinegar and that gave us more action. But try to add it only twice, it will not work the third time ;-) The colors are so much fun!

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Maybe you are looking for some last minute St. Patrick's Day activities to do with your kids today. I have just the right solution for you! Below, I will post two easy activities, with supplies that you will be able to find around your house in just few minutes, and that your kids will love!

COLOR A RAINBOW

In this activity kids will color rice using food coloring and ziplock bags!

Pour some rice into ziplock bags (the more the better, so later you have enough for the kids to dig in for treasure). Have them pick their food coloring colors.

Then have them add some drops to the rice in the ziplock bag. It depends how much rice you have - if you have lots of it, put more food coloring and the other way around. Also, you can make purple and orange by putting in two colors together.

Close the ziplock bag and have the kids spread the food coloring all over by gently playing with the bag.

And here is the result. Isn't it just beautiful? We used brown rice and it still colored nicely!

...and more RAINBOW

You will need pipe cleaners in the rainbow colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple; and a piece of styrofoam.

Have the kids put one end of the pipe cleaner into the styrofoam, bend it, and put the other end in. Follow the rainbow color pattern.

Here is the final product!

Have a fun St. Patrick's Day celebration!

Food coloring and snow

I have decided that we have to go back to our awesome art projects! I did some research and here is the first one I found. Since it's winter (with no snow) we have been doing lots of activities with winter theme. This one uses shaving cream (snow), water, and food coloring.

I sprayed the shaving cream on top of the water and the boys squeezed the food coloring on top of it

This is what happens (sorry for the blurry picture)

Doesn't the food coloring look beautiful on top of the shaving cream?

They dipped their card stock papers in the shaving cream and I let them have some fun!

Little smudging... But I really think the best is the feel of the shaving cream :-)

We even used the shower squeegee.

And the final product! I love using my light fixture as the drying rack.

I got this awesome idea from a very inspiring blog Chasing cheerios
